Sell Your Junk on Craigslist for Quick Cash

Craigslist is a huge online classified service available for all major cities in the US and many foreign countries as well.  Most ads are free.  Go to Craigslist.org and click on your city/state/country on the right hand side.   To list your unwanted items, click on “post to classified” in the top left hand corner.  You can create an account or list items without an account.  Click on “for sale”.  Choose a category that fits your item.   Fill in the blanks for title, price, description, and location.   Review your listing.  Ads appear within 15 minutes of posting.  Easy way to may extra money.

Here are a few tips to help make your ads more successful –

  • Include photographs!   Photos greatly increase your chances of selling your item.
  • Be descriptive in your titles.  “Mens Cole Haan Black Loafers Size 11D” is a much more useful title than “shoes”.
  • Put as many details as you can in your descriptions.  Size, age, condition, brand, model number, color, location. craigslistscreenshot2
  • State any flaws your item may have in the description.  This will keep you from wasting your time and the potential buyer’s time.
  • Always include a price in your ad.  Most people will not go to the extra trouble of emailing or calling you for the price.  If you are not sure how to price your item, search for similar items to see how they are priced.  If there are no others like yours start with half of the new price(unless your item is very rare).
  • Don’t type your posting in all caps.  Most people consider this to be rude or the work of spammers.
  • Ignore any buyers wanting to buy with money orders or money wire transactions.  These are most likely scams.
  • If you are concerned for your safety when arranging pickup of item, meet the potential buyer in a busy public place during daylight hours.
  • Clean items are much more likely to sell than dirty items.  Spend a few minutes cleaning the dirt/dust off.
  • One of the best times to list your items is just before a holiday weekend.  People have more time off to peruse listings and meet up with you to buy.
